About

I have been a storyteller, journalist and communication strategist for more than two decades. My work spans a myriad of print and digital platforms that serve multiple audiences.

Early in my career, I sought a newspaper job that required me to tackle a lot of tasks. As a sports editor, I did a lot more than cover the games – I wrote, edited, designed pages, took photographs and sometimes pasted up the pages. I even delivered a newspaper after 9 p.m. to an angry subscriber who called while I was writing a story because he had not received his paper.

That broad-based experience set the stage for my entire career. I continually learned new skills, and with those skills sought positions that taught me even more skills and offered me more responsibility. I have been a reporter, section editor, assistant city editor, city editor, internal communication specialist and a research communication strategist.

I have written and edited stories about:

  • Scientific research
  • Education
  • Business
  • Philanthropy
  • Crime
  • Public affairs
  • Sports
  • Home and garden
  • Entertainment
  • Human resources initiatives

Supervisors, readers and clients trust my ability to address sensitive and complicated issues clearly, honestly and professionally.

I earned my bachelor’s degree in communications from John Brown University in Arkansas and worked as a reporter and editor at The Helena-West Helena (Ark.) Daily World, the Siloam Springs, Ark. Herald-Leader and the Denton (Texas) Record Chronicle. I later joined the University of North Texas as a communication strategist before relocating to the Pacific Northwest.

At the Daily World and the Herald-Leader, I was the sports editor. At the Denton Record-Chronicle, I began as a sports writer and worked my way through multiple newsroom positions, culminating in six years as city editor. I supervised a team of seven reporters, guiding the local and regional news coverage. I wrote a daily ensured that breaking news was posted online immediately. At UNT, I moderated the websites and published electronic newsletters for employee news and university research.

I live in Sedro-Woolley, Wash. with my wife, Karen and Jazzy, a 10-year-old Chinese crested.
